Semi-Private Workshops
Sign up for semi-private, one-day workshops, given whenever I have 3 signups
for that class. Limited to 3 students so that each student receives personalized
attention. These one-day workshops, are given in my studio at the Novato Arts Center,
and designed especially to your needs. All materials needed for workshop are supplied.
Cost is $225, plus material fee of $25.

Beginning Encaustic, July 20, August 3, September 21
This class is designed to give an overview of the medium, including safety requirements
and the many versatile uses of the medium. It is comprehensive enough for the student
to begin exploring on their own the multitude of possibilities inherent in this
exciting medium. This class will include the basics of the following topics as well
as a little hands-on working time:
- Encaustic methods and materials
- Safety measures and precautions
- Supports and surfaces, preparing panels
- Combining encaustics with other mediums
- Etching and mark making
Encaustic Monotype, July 27, August 18, September 28
In this class we will explore
how to make paintings using encaustic on paper with a Monotype Hot Box. It is not
necessary to have any prior experience in working with encaustics for this class.
It will provide a basic overview of the various kinds of paint and paper used and
a multitude of techniques that can be utilized to make encaustic monotypes as well
as a little hands-on working time.
Advanced Encaustic, dates available upon request
Instruction in this class will
be given on whatever techniques the student would like to explore for their own
studio practice. This class would be for those students already working in encaustics,
or those that have had some encaustic instruction, and are interested in exploring
particular techniques. The class will include instruction in specific techniques
as well as hands-on working time utilizing them. Students will be grouped together
with others wanting to learn those techniques. For example:
Combining Photography with Encaustic, or
Advanced Collage and Transfer Techniques, or
Combining Mixed Media and Encaustic

Private Workshops:
These one-on-one sessions are designed to give an overview of the medium, safety
requirements, and the many versatile uses of the medium, and is comprehensive enough
to start you exploring on your own the multitude of possibilities inherent in this
exciting medium. All materials are furnished.
The one-day session consists of the basics in encaustics with a little hands-on
working time and the two-day will cover all of the above plus sufficient working
time to experience the wax and demonstrated techniques. The cost of a one-day private
class is $350, which includes at least 6 hours of instruction and all materials.
The two-day is $650, which also includes all materials with at least 12 hours of
instruction and work time. The basics of the following topics will be covered:
- Encaustic methods and materials
- Safety measures and precautions
- Supports and surfaces, preparing panels
- Combining encaustics with other mediums
- Etching and mark making
- Techniques of collage, gold leafing, and image transfer
